Carmel High graduate Riley Imamura ranks second on the Dartmouth volleyball team in both kills and digs this season, the Monterey Herald reported Friday.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore has been one of the Big Green's most productive players all fall. As of an Oct. 15 team preview on Dartmouth athletics, Imamura led Dartmouth with 204.5 points. Teammate Zori Brown trailed closely at 203.0 points and paced the squad with 178 kills.
Imamura's breakout performances have come in bunches. On Sept. 6 against Canisius in Buffalo, she posted career highs of 16 kills and 19 points in a 3-1 Dartmouth win. She hit .227 on 44 attempts and added three service aces. Imamura closed out both the first and fourth sets with kills.
Three weeks later, she topped those numbers. Against previously unbeaten Harvard on Sept. 26, Imamura set new career bests with 18 kills, 23.5 points, 19 digs and six total blocks in a five-set loss, according to Dartmouth athletics. Dartmouth had set point in the first set at 24-23 before Harvard escaped 30-28. Imamura's service ace tied the third set at 24, and the Big Green won it 27-25 to force a fourth.
Dartmouth pushed Harvard to five sets again on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H. The Big Green rallied from two sets down before falling 3-2. Brown led all players with 19 kills and 20.5 points, while Dartmouth out-blocked Harvard 11-6 and recorded 75 digs, according to Dartmouth's recap. The Big Green stand at 7-11 overall and 1-7 in Ivy League play.
Imamura's path to Ivy League volleyball ran through a significant setback. As a 14-year-old Carmel High freshman, she needed surgery on a dislocated right shoulder and spent six months in rehabilitation, the Herald reported in a December 2024 profile.
She returned to become a four-year varsity letter winner in volleyball and track and field. Her former Carmel coach, Butch Mandon, praised her two-way ability in that profile. "Riley is one of the best blockers I have ever worked with," Mandon said.
Imamura's senior season at Carmel was dominant. She recorded 261 kills and 216 digs across 84 sets, according to MaxPreps. She earned All-Monterey County Most Valuable Player honors, and Carmel went undefeated in the Pacific Coast Athletic League (PCAL) Gabilan Division that year, capturing its first league title in a decade.
Her Dartmouth roster page lists her as an outside hitter, right side hitter and middle blocker. As a first-year in 2025, she appeared in 11 matches and 21 sets, recording four total blocks and eight digs.
Dartmouth hosts Yale on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. and Brown on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. at Leede Arena.
