The Monterey County Sheriff's Office lifted all remaining Timber Fire evacuation orders and warnings Wednesday, Oct. 7, clearing the way for displaced Big Sur residents to return home.

The fire has burned 25,352 acres and reached 90% containment after nearly two months. The agency announced the final zone clearances, including zones MRY-D082, MRY-F015-B, MRY-F015-C and MRY-F023-B, on its official X account.

The blaze ignited the night of Saturday, Aug. 8, according to CBS News Bay Area. Three firefighters were injured during the response, and more than 660 structures were threatened as of mid-September, CBS News Bay Area reported at the time.

Plaskett Fire fully contained

The separate Plaskett Fire, which started Aug. 26 in far southern Monterey County, has reached 100% containment after burning 30,124 acres, KSBW reported. All evacuation orders and warnings for that blaze have also been lifted.

Crews continue fire-ground repairs

Cal Fire said in an Oct. 7 update that helicopters continued water drops near Double Cone on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with no new smoke spotted by day's end. Infrared flights picked up some increased heat in steep drainages on the fire's west side, but the agency described the activity as well within control lines.

A lookout was set to be in place Wednesday to watch for new smoke or heat near Double Cone, and a reconnaissance flight was scheduled.

Repair work is ongoing across the burn area. Crews on the east side are fixing fencing and grading roads. Dozer line repair is complete on the south side. Coast Ridge Road is being graded as crews work north along the west side. On the north side, repair work is finished and heavy equipment was expected to move out Wednesday.

Crews also continued to patrol Highway 1 and assist with traffic control while heavy equipment was relocated. Highway 1 through Big Sur reopened to through traffic between Cambria and Carmel on Sept. 14, according to CBS News Bay Area.
