Monterey Peninsula College will rename its Welcome Center in honor of Larry Walker, a longtime employee who spent 37 years at MPC.

The college plans a ribbon-cutting and naming ceremony for Building 10 on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to noon, according to MPC's announcement. The event will take place in front of the building, near the main MPC sign. Light refreshments will be served.

Walker's career at MPC stretched across nearly four decades. He started as a student and athlete. He later worked in the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) office and as a counselor for the TRIO Upward Bound Program, John Devine wrote on X. Walker served as Dean of Student Services and Vice President of Students. He is also a member of the Lobo Hall of Fame.

Students, faculty, staff and community members are all invited to attend.

The naming comes during a period of campus investment at MPC. The college's 2025–2026 annual report, released Sept. 23, noted 39 facilities projects in progress or completed under Measure V, the $230 million voter-approved bond. That included $24 million spent in the 2025–26 fiscal year on student wellness, campus safety and academic infrastructure, according to the annual report.

In that report, Superintendent/President Marshall T. Fulbright III said MPC has entered a new era defined by its people and driven by possibility. He pointed to the college's work on equitable access, student support and long-term progress across its Monterey, Marina and Seaside campuses.

The Building 10 ceremony is one of several upcoming events on the Monterey campus. MPC will also host "State of the College: Exhibiting Excellence" on Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon in Building 10, featuring an interactive gallery walk with four exhibition zones highlighting the college's achievements and future plans.
