Seaside police arrested two International School of Monterey employees accused of embezzling a combined $296,800 from the charter school in separate schemes.
The Seaside Police Department announced Wednesday, Oct. 28 that Terry Bumper, 42, the school's food services director, has been charged with felony embezzlement. The school's chief financial officer, a 45-year-old woman, was also arrested on a felony embezzlement allegation. Investigators found no evidence the two were working together, according to the press release.
The case began Aug. 12, when the International School of Monterey, located at 1720 Yosemite Street in Seaside, reported a possible embezzlement to police.
Food orders allegedly diverted to personal business
The department's Investigations Division identified Bumper as the first suspect. Detectives allege he embezzled approximately $58,800 by ordering food products for his personal business and having the school pay for those purchases, according to the press release.
Bumper was arrested Sept. 24. The Monterey County District Attorney's Office formally filed felony embezzlement charges against him Oct. 20.
Second scheme uncovered during investigation
While detectives were investigating Bumper, the school notified them of a second possible embezzlement involving its chief financial officer, the press release stated.
Detectives allege the CFO embezzled approximately $238,000 from the school. The investigation found she used school funds for personal expenses, including luxury vacations, restaurants, spas and online shopping, according to the department.
She was arrested Thursday, Oct. 22. The press release did not state whether the District Attorney's Office has filed formal charges against her.
Investigations remain open
Both investigations remain ongoing, and detectives are continuing to examine evidence, the department stated. Investigators have not uncovered any evidence that the two alleged schemes were connected.
No public statement from the International School of Monterey or its administration regarding the arrests appeared in available records as of publication. The charter school serves about 440 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
