Two Carmel High School graduates helped Fresno State roll past Sacramento State 49-3 on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Oscar Weigel, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman, started for the Bulldogs for the second straight week. Fellow Carmel graduate Bode Stoddard, listed at 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds, played as a reserve lineman.

The game was Fresno State's home opener and its first home contest as a member of the new Pac-12 Conference. Quarterback Jayden Mandal completed 23 of 26 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Bryson Donelson added 102 yards on 13 carries with three scores. The Bulldogs produced 542 total yards and scored 32 points in the second quarter alone, according to ESPN's game recap. Sacramento State fell to 1-2.

Weigel and Stoddard both took winding paths to Fresno. Weigel spent two seasons at the University of San Diego, where he earned All-Pioneer Football League honorable mention in 2025 as the starting left tackle in all 12 games. He allowed two sacks that season and helped San Diego finish 8-4, according to Fresno State's signing-day roster sheet.

Stoddard's route was different. He played defensive line at Carmel High before switching to offense at San Diego Mesa College in 2025, where he started at right tackle as a true freshman.

Weigel also started in Fresno State's season opener, a 39-0 loss at USC on Sept. 6. The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 with Saturday's win.

Another Monterey County product appeared in the same game. Josiah Freeman, whom Devine identified as a former Soledad High School and Hartnell College receiver, caught six passes for 100 yards.

Fresno State travels to San Jose State for the Battle of the Valley at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19.
