River Lyon has piled up 25 goals and nine assists through 19 matches this fall for the Chapman University men's water polo team, Monterey County sports columnist John Devine noted on X on Monday, Oct. 12. Six came in his last two games.

Lyon, a former Pacific Grove Breakers standout listed as a sophomore on Chapman's roster, scored three goals in the Panthers' 15-12 SCIAC win over Occidental College on Saturday, Oct. 10, at De Mandel Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, according to the Occidental box score. He also netted three in an 11-17 conference loss at California Lutheran University on Wednesday, Oct. 7, scoring once in the second quarter and twice in the fourth, according to Cal Lutheran's recap.

Chapman, an NCAA Division III program in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, sits at 3-16 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play. Lyon, who wears No. 3, has been a bright spot on a roster that has struggled for wins. At a Gary Troyer Tournament match on Sunday, Oct. 4, he added two steals against Augustana, according to a Chapman athletics recap.

Lyon's college production tracks with the numbers he put up on the Peninsula. His NCSA recruiting profile, published in December 2024, listed Pacific Grove High School career records of 270 goals, 122 assists and 190 steals. He set a single-season goals record of 115 in 2023. Lyon earned First Team All-League and Offensive League MVP honors in the Pacific Coast Athletic League in 2023-24, according to his Chapman roster biography.

In that NCSA profile, written while he was still a senior at Pacific Grove, Lyon described his ambitions: "I want to play with athletes who are better players than me, to learn and grow as a player and to see how far I can push myself."

Chapman hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at Allred Aquatics Center in Orange, California. The Panthers then travel to Long Beach State on Saturday, Oct. 17, at noon.
