Former Monterey High football coach Dan Albert will be inducted into the California High School Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Albert, who also served 20 years as Monterey's mayor, will be honored at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena alongside nine other inductees before the UCLA-Wisconsin football game, according to the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation. He is one of three coaches in the 2026 class, which also includes seven players.
Albert's coaching numbers at Monterey High still stand out. In 23 seasons as head varsity football coach, his teams won 15 league championships and posted an 80 percent winning record, according to the Italian Heritage Society of the Monterey Peninsula. Nine of his players reached the NFL. Three played in Super Bowls.
He coached at Monterey High for 28 years total and also led the baseball program for 16 seasons before retiring after 38 years of teaching at the school.
Before he was a coach, Albert was a player. Born in San Francisco in 1930, he grew up in Monterey and played quarterback on the 1948 Monterey High team that won the Coast Counties Athletic League championship. The Monterey Herald called that squad "The Team of the Century." Albert went on to play football at Monterey Peninsula College, where his team won the program's first championship, before transferring to San Jose State University.
One of Albert's 1948 teammates, Superior Court Judge Nat Agliano, died in summer 2026 at age 90. A 2016 Herald photo shows the two holding a football trophy from their championship season and a letterman sweater from their era at the school.
After retiring from coaching, Albert entered public life. He won a seat on the Monterey City Council in 1979 and became mayor in 1986. He served 20 years in that role, longer than anyone in the city's 225-year history at the time, before stepping down in November 2006.
Albert joins a 2026 class that includes former NFL players Pat Tillman of Leland High School, Derek Carr of Bakersfield Christian and Keyshawn Johnson of Dorsey High School. The Hall of Fame, located inside Tunnel 20 at the Rose Bowl, opened in 2023 as a partnership among the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the National Football Foundation and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Classes are elected every other year by a statewide committee representing all ten CIF sections.
The Monterey High football stadium already bears his name: Dan Albert Stadium.
