Carmel High School football coach Golden Anderson won his 150th career game Friday, Sept. 11, when the Padres beat Rancho San Juan 43-20.
Anderson reached the milestone faster than any previous coach in Carmel program history, the Monterey Herald reported. He also serves as the school's athletic director.
The Padres jumped out early. John Devine posted on X that Carmel led 22-0 in the second quarter before cruising to the final margin.
The milestone caps a stretch of sustained success under Anderson. A Monterey Herald preseason preview in August described Carmel as chasing a 15th playoff spot in 18 seasons under his leadership. In December 2024, the Padres completed a perfect 15-0 season and won the school's first state championship, beating El Capitan 48-7 in the CIF Division 5AA title game in Fullerton, according to KSBW.
Anderson praised his training staff ahead of that title game. "Our training staff does an incredible job of getting these kids prepared each week," he said in December 2024. "Think about it. We've played a season and a half of football."
The coaching philosophy behind those 150 wins has stayed consistent. When the San Francisco 49ers honored Anderson as their Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week in December 2013, he said his goal was for student athletes "to learn the values of hard work, discipline, and the ability to handle adversity all while having fun."
The 2026 season tested that approach early. Ahead of Carmel's first-ever home night game on Aug. 28, Anderson told the Sandpiper, Carmel High's student newspaper, that the team needed to block out distractions. "We can't make it about everything happening around the game," he said. "We've got to focus on football and what we need to do."
The Padres lost that Shoe Game to Pacific Grove 26-22, ending an 11-year winning streak in the rivalry. They bounced back with a 34-20 win at Woodside on Sept. 4, with Lucas Rocha rushing for two touchdowns and Luke Stiver throwing two touchdown passes. Then came the 43-20 rout of Rancho San Juan for win No. 150.
Carmel's next home game is Friday, Sept. 25, against Monterey High School.
