Seaside sealed a time capsule on Tuesday, Oct. 13, that is set to be opened in 2076.
The city marked its 72nd birthday and city hall's 60th anniversary with a free celebration at City Hall, 440 Harcourt Ave., KSBW Action News 8 reported. The capsule was buried near the Seaside Memorial Library on the civic center grounds and will remain closed for 50 years.
The event ran from 6 to 8 p.m. and included family activities and cupcakes, the city's event listing shows. The listing invited residents to help seal the capsule as part of the evening's program.
Seaside was incorporated on Oct. 13, 1954, according to the Monterey County Free Libraries' branch history. Jack Oldemeyer served as the city's first mayor, according to historical records. The city's origins stretch back to 1887, when Dr. John L.D. Roberts purchased 150 acres of the former Rancho Noche Buena, which had been owned by his uncle David Houghton, for $5,000.
City hall has its own notable history. Modernist architect Edward Durrell Stone, who also designed the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., was commissioned in the mid-1960s to design Seaside's seat of government, Monterey County Now reported in 2007. The building features thin vertical supports and large overhanging roofs, hallmarks of Stone's style from that era.
The library next door has its own deep roots. Community book-sharing through the Emerson Library Club began in 1931. Voters approved a bond in June 1968 to fund a new building, and the 10,000-square-foot facility opened on Aug. 25, 1975. It is named after former City Manager Gordon R. Forrest, who died in 1969 before construction was finished.
