Monterey State Historic Park is pulling posthumous portraits, hair wreaths and hair jewelry out of storage for a new exhibit at Casa Gutierrez.

The exhibit, titled "Though Lost to Sight, In Memory Dear: An Exploration of Memento Mori and Posthumous Portraiture," opens with a free reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the gallery at 590 Calle Principal in downtown Monterey, according to the Old Monterey Foundation. Regular gallery hours begin Friday, Oct. 9. The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The objects span the late colonial period into the Victorian era and explore how families preserved the memory of loved ones through physical keepsakes. Many of the items have never been displayed publicly, according to the Old Monterey Foundation.

No closing date has been announced.

Takeout orders at Montrio benefit MY Museum

A few blocks away, the Coastal Roots Hospitality Group is channeling takeout dollars to the Monterey County Youth Museum, known as MY Museum.

Through October, 10% of every takeout order at Montrio, 414 Calle Principal, is automatically donated to the nonprofit children's museum, according to the Old Monterey Foundation. The donation does not apply to delivery orders.

Coastal Roots said in a Sept. 16 Instagram post that the "Pick It Up – Pay It Forward" program also covers takeout from two other Coastal Roots restaurants, Tarpy's and Rio Grill, with proceeds supporting MY Museum's educational exhibits, school field trips and family outreach programs.

MY Museum, at 425 Washington St. in Monterey, is a nonprofit with more than 8,500 square feet of hands-on exhibits across nine gallery areas. It is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
