Volunteers will pull trash from Laguna Grande Regional Park and Robert's Lake in Seaside on Saturday, Sept. 19. The cleanup brings together groups from Seaside, Monterey and Del Rey Oaks to protect two water habitats.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, which the California Coastal Commission has called the state's largest annual volunteer event. Save Our Shores, the Monterey Bay regional coordinator for the effort since 1984, is organizing sites across the region.
The Seaside site is backed by a coalition of local groups: Sustainable Seaside, Sustainable Del Rey Oaks, the Monterey High School Ocean Advocacy Club, The DeWasters, the Monterey Peninsula College Environmental Club and the City of Seaside. Catherine Crockett posted the event details on the Communities for Sustainable Monterey County website on Sept. 11.
The event is free and open to all ages. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult with a signed waiver. Registration is required through the Save Our Shores website, where volunteers choose a cleanup site and complete a waiver.
Check-in is at the dirt parking lot between the Laguna Grande Park lakeside entrance and Chili's on Canyon Del Rey Boulevard, according to the city of Seaside's event listing. Green signs will mark the spot.
Organizers will provide gloves, garbage bags, litter sticks, snacks and water. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own bucket, litter grabber and reusable water bottle. Closed-toe shoes, long pants, a hat and sunscreen are recommended.
Volunteers can also download the free Clean Swell app from the Ocean Conservancy to log the debris they collect.
The Seaside site is one of dozens across the Monterey Bay area. In a recent year, Save Our Shores coordinated 50 cleanup sites across Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, where 1,297 volunteers removed 5,558 pounds of debris in three hours, according to a Surfrider Foundation Monterey Chapter report.
Statewide, the annual effort has drawn more than 1.5 million volunteers over the years and removed more than 25 million pounds of trash from waterways, according to event organizers.
The Surfrider Foundation Monterey Chapter is hosting a separate Coastal Cleanup Day event the same morning at the Sand City dunes, also in partnership with Save Our Shores.
Registration for the Seaside cleanup closes when the site reaches capacity.
