Seaside police arrested the International School of Monterey's former chief financial officer for allegedly embezzling $238,000 to pay for vacations, restaurants, spa visits and shopping, Monterey County NOW reported.
The former CFO, 45, was arrested Oct. 22 on suspicion of felony embezzlement, according to Seaside police. A second former employee, 42-year-old Terry Bumper, the school's former food services director, faces separate felony charges for allegedly stealing $58,800. The two cases together total nearly $300,000 in alleged theft from the Seaside school.
We reported Oct. 29 that both former employees were accused of using school funds for personal gain.
How the investigation started
The school, located at 1720 Yosemite St. in Seaside, reported a possible embezzlement involving one employee on Aug. 12, according to a Seaside Police Department statement, as reported by KSBW.
Detectives first identified Bumper as a suspect. Police alleged he used school funds to buy food products for his personal catering business. Bumper was arrested Sept. 24. The Monterey County District Attorney's Office filed felony charges against him Oct. 20.
During that investigation, the school reported a separate suspected embezzlement involving the former CFO, according to Seaside police.
Former CFO not yet charged
The Monterey County District Attorney's Office had not formally charged the former CFO as of Oct. 29, according to Monterey County NOW. Cmdr. Matthew Doza of the Seaside Police Department said a search warrant remained pending and the investigation was ongoing.
Police said they have not found evidence that the two suspects worked together or that the cases were connected.
Bumper denies allegations
Bumper pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and posted $20,000 in bail, Monterey County NOW reported. He denied the allegations and said he was not working with the former CFO.
Bumper told Monterey County NOW that all he did was order food for the school, which required another person's sign-off. He denied transferring money to his personal business, a catering company that closed around the time of his arrest.
Neither the former CFO nor the school replied to Monterey County NOW's requests for comment. Both suspects are no longer employed by the school, police told KSBW.
